Patrice Wingert and Barbara Kantrowitz have been awarded the second annual Award for Excellence in Science and Medical Journalism from The Endocrine Society. The winning article, "Uh, O!," appeared in the February 9, 2009 issue of Newsweek.
In the article, Wingert and Kantrowitz report that some medical experts were disappointed in a program of The Oprah Winfrey Show which they say seemed to give hormone replacement and Suzanne Somers's controversial theories on aging an enthusiastic endorsement. They go on to provide more information about the health concerns regarding hormone replacement therapy.
The award was presented by Robert M. Carey, M.D., president of The Endocrine Society, at the annual meeting, ENDO 10, in Washington, D.C.
